Is LASIK for Everyone? Let’s Talk About It. – Mann Eye

Over the years at the MAN Eye Institute, we’ve helped tens of thousands of people enjoy improved vision without the hassles of glasses and contacts with advanced, life-changing LASIK procedures. And in all those years, we’ve heard many of the same concerns.

So, as we head into the new year, we’d like to pause and take a moment to address some of the common concerns related to LASIK.

Are you someone who errs on the side of caution? Maybe a little risk aversion? Look before you jump what kind of person? you are not alone!

Many people cite fear as the biggest obstacle they have to overcome when deciding on LASIK. We understand. After all, you only have one set of eyes and you need it to function well for a lifetime, right?

But please allow us to put your mind to rest. LASIK is a safe and effective procedure with an impressive success rate. In our risk-free and no-obligation consultancy, we are happy to answer all of your questions and address all of your concerns.

The top three questions we hear from people worried about LASIK:

Does it hurt?

Most of our patients describe the sensation during LASIK as mild pressure. Before starting your procedure, the Mann Eye Institute surgeon will apply numbing drops (no injections, we promise!). You may also be given oral relaxation medication beforehand. Most of our patients go back to their usual routine the next day!

What if I accidentally blink during my operation?

Another common concern. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, too. Anesthetic drops help eliminate the urge to blink and any blinking is prevented by an instrument called a lid speculum, which gently obstructs the upper and lower eyelids. It will be put into place after the anesthetic drops have been activated.

What are the risks associated with LASIK surgery?

As with any surgery, there are some risks. But please be aware that complications from LASIK are extremely rare. During the free examination, the Mann Eye Institute counseling team will explain any risks associated with your procedure, so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

All savers, raise your hands! You know who you are. Those with savings accounts, retirement plans, and sometimes money to set aside at the end of the month.

For people who are apprehensive about the price associated with LASIK, see you! We understand your concern. Eye surgery is an investment…but it is an investment in yourself, and an investment that offers you the opportunity to enjoy visual freedom without the hassles and limitations of eyeglasses and contact lenses.

In all our years serving the people of Texans, we have yet to meet someone who regrets investing in the life-changing LASIK technology. In fact, most people say their only regret is that they waited so long before deciding to get it.

The most important questions related to the cost of LASIK:

Is LASIK covered by insurance?

Because LASIK is considered an elective surgery, most insurance companies do not cover this procedure. But the majority of Vision plans offer some type of discount and some offer a discount on top of an existing promotion. If you are not sure, just come visit us! Our finance team is happy to review your employer’s insurance policy to see if part of your procedure may be covered or if a discount is available.

Can I afford LASIK?

On average, people who fund their procedures with Mann Eye pay the same amount they would spend buying a cup of coffee per day (not expensive coffee either!). And thanks to affordable financing options, most people can comfortably afford LASIK. We love working with our patients to create a payment plan that fits almost any budget!

Can I use my FSA?

Yes! How great is that?! If you have a flexible spending account, you can use this money for tax-free savings on your procedure. FSA dollars don’t carry over from year to year, so why not use them before you lose them?

LASIK for the skeptics

Are you someone who asks everything? Tends to think if something sounds too good to be true, maybe it is? Hey, we got it. We understand that you may be a bit skeptical about whether or not LASIK is all cracked.

Top questions from the skeptical audience:

Does LASIK “fade” over time?

This is a common misconception, but no, LASIK does not fade or go away. The procedure makes a permanent change to the cornea, so the treatment will not wear off over time. However, as your eyes age, vision problems that have nothing to do with the surface of the cornea, such as presbyopia (vision over 40) and cataracts, can persist. When we assess your vision at your consultation, we will determine which of our many advanced vision correction procedures is most appropriate for you.

Does it really matter where LASIK is done?

Yes it is. Not all LASIK operations are the same, and not all eye surgeons are the same. At Man Eye, we have the latest technology in the hands of some of the most experienced eye surgeons in the country. We have been the trusted LASIK leaders in Texas since day one.
